This book offers new insights into the Memorial of Moses on Mount Nebo, one of the most renowned coenobitic monasteries in the Byzantine period in Arabia. Starting from the archaeological data, the author critically reflects on the architectural phases of the basilica, the management and daily life in the monastery. Special attention is also given to pilgrimages to the monastic shrines beyond the River Jordan and their progressive abandonment.

The volume, which has emerged from an international conference of the same title, unites a range of disciplinary and interdisciplinary contributions on invasions of Goths and other Germanic tribes into the Roman Empire, focusing primarily on the third-century CE. The newly discovered fragments of the lost work Scythica by the third-century historian Dexippus of Athens, the so-called Scythica Vindobonensia alias Dexippus Vindobonensis, which survived in a Greek palimpsest kept in the Austrian National Library in Vienna, have great impact on the study of this field. The contributions explore the Vienna fragments in their historical and historiographical contexts, from the Roman to the Byzantine Era, and the history of the invasions themselves.

This third volume, which concludes a research project on the Viennese Zionist Wolfgang von Weisl and his family history, generously funded by the Austrian Science Fund (FWF), presents two historical and fictional works written by him: the play Erlöser and the novel Der Anfang der Wandlung Israels, whose central figures, Simon Bar Kochba und Josepf Trumpeldor – the latter immigrated from Russia to Palestine – are still present in Israel’s collective memory as glorified national heros and martyrs.

It is the first monograph that fully treats the question of the fate of the History in the Hellenistic world. The book collects and analyses for the first time all the fragmentary evidence on Thucydides’ readership from the Classical and the Hellenistic period.
